Barefaced Bass - Ultra lightweight high power bass guitar speaker cabinets

Customer Feedback

04/05/25 - Reformer 112 - USA

Hey again!

So I did it, haha.  I cut some plywood into a mountable speaker-hole-blocker, complete with a felt gasket/seal.  And… I liked the passive radiator setup much more.  (At least at reasonable volume levels.  Maybe it gets more flubby at deafening levels but I don’t want to go deaf!) It kinda feels/sounds part-way between sealed and the AVD in that the mids and highs “open up” more, and the bass extends lower.  Maybe partly due to changes in the compliance (less “choked”)

Also I no longer think the AVD is any less “tight”.  It’s just different frequency emphasis.  If I dial down the presence and use the Mark IV graphic EQ to boost 80 and 240 a bit, the Reformer gets close to the “2x12 as 1x12 passive radiator” sound.  Different, but very nice!

So now I’m very curious in the tonal differences of the AVD models.  E.g how the cab volume/dimensions flavor the sound.  Even with the AVD I’m guessing the bigger cabs have more lows/low-mids? And different signature/flavor due to cab-internal effects (standing waves, comb filtering, reflections returning to the rear of the speaker cone)?  Although likely differently/less with the AVD than a sealed cab.

Ie Upsizing vs reformer with same speaker(s)  :)

Thanks as always,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Basically the bigger cabs sound a bit bigger in the lows - making the cab bigger lowers the tuning of the Helmholtz resonance, which on its own would make the lows reach deeper but sound less fat, and making the cab bigger increases the Q of the Helmholtz resonance, which on its own would make the lows fatter and eventually boomier. But as the larger cab lowers the Fb and doing that decreases the Q, but the bigger box increases the Q, you basically get a similar sound and feel in the lows, just more low frequency extension.

Alex

02/06/25 - Big Baby 2 - UK

I've recently moved on from a 15 year stint with a band and started a new project, in which we've also decided to try using IEMs and going amp free. That means that the Big Baby 2s that have been sounding fabulous in my bass rig for the last 5 years would have been unused, unless 🤔...

I also run the PA and I'd heard, and read, that BB2s sound great as PA cabs, in fact they were available with optional top hats so you could stick them up on tripods. Mine didn't have these but, since I've built a few decent speaker cabs, I decided to retrofit them myself, so I went past the point of no return and took a 40mm hole saw to them. I fitted the top hats using another layer of ply inside to reinforce the base of the cab. Before drilling holes, I took care to find the centre of gravity ('cos the cab is heavier at the front where the drivers are...turns out it's in line with the strap handle almost as if it was designed that way 🤣) and also took care to seal the top hat and the bolts, nyloc nuts and washers that I'd used to mount the top hats because you can't have air leaks.
Driven by my X32 Rack (my new Wing Rack arrived last Friday but I haven't learned how to use it yet) and a new Yamaha PX8 power amp they sound incredible as full range PA speakers, like a big pair of studio monitors and LOUD! I'm confident that even up on tripods and with some modest EQ they'll kick out enough bass for the kick drum and my low B, have more than enough clout for the places my new rock band will play at and let me leave the heavy old sub at home.
Ironically, their first outing was doing a PA gig at a Jazz Festival in a fairly big church, that I covered for a pal of mine, and they sounded fantastic. Rich, full bodied, well balanced on a mic'd up grand piano and various saxes and guitars throughout the day. Filled the place with quality sound with the amp cruising at -30db.
So now I have some top notch PA cabs and, when I'm doing bass gigs they still sound exactly the same as they always did in my rig. Well happy! I can also confirm that, when you get inside the cab, they're every bit as well designed and constructed as you'd hope!

05/06/25 - Super Compact - UK

My new Super Compact was delivered on Monday, and got the chance to try it for the first time at rehearsal tonight.

I was blown away by the sound. Such a difference from my old practice 210, and every bit as good (actually better) a sound as my 810 in that tiny little package. An absolute blinder.

27/05/25 - Six10 - USA

I received my Six10 in November 2019 and I have only grown more and more fond of the sound, feel and (low) weight of this cabinet during the time I have owned it! My band (hardcore/punk) plays 50-60 dates per year and the Six10 is truly the cornerstone of my bass sound. I get compliments on my bass tone on nearly every gig we play. In fact, two bass playing mates of mine have recently ordered and received Big Twins after playing, and falling in love with my Six10!

Occasionally, when my band plays very small venues/stages, the Six10 is too large and I've had to resort to using a backline cab and my bass tone suffers horribly... and here's where I made a mistake! I decided to purchase a new GK212 Neo IV 212 to use for the small stage gigs, and after 5 gigs with it over the last year along with a few rehearsals, I've learned that I truly dislike the overly bright/clangy/hyped sound of the speakers... and unfortunately it's too late for me to return.

With the above said, I am wondering if you would consider selling me two of your 12XN drivers as I am hoping they can provide a bit of the warmth I get with my Six10?

Todd

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Todd,

The 12XN drivers definitely won't get you sound you love from the Six10, they're accurate, not warm. And we don't sell them on their own anyway.

What amp are you using? A Two10S could work rather well, and you'll be able to stack it with the Six10 for even bigger gigs.

Best regards,

Alex

Hi Alex,

For me, the Six10 is such a beautiful sounding cab, and it just sounds better and better when I am able to really push it (usually only at outdoor/festival gigs), that I can't imagine wanting or needing a Two10 on top.

My sense is to save up for the Three10 as it will save me 20lbs over the Six10 and still be able to keep up with the dual Orange 212's our guitar player insists on using for our 'smaller' gigs at pubs/bars ;-)

When you have a moment, please let me know your thoughts on the Three10

Thank you!

Todd

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Todd,

Yes, the Three10 plan sounds like a good one! If your guitarist cranks up his rig to the max (assuming he's using a big amp as well as two 2x12"s) you'll struggle to be heard - but by that point I think everyone in the venue will have told him to turn down.

Best regards,

Alex

28/05/25 - Upsetter 112N (Neo Copperback) - NZ

After spending some time with the cab I have reached a couple conclusions:
  • I really like the cab, the AVD works as advertised giving semi omni dispersion up into the low mids, making the cab sound much bigger than it is and going deeper than you would expect for the size.  It's crazy light and rigid with the right amount of cab resonance for guitar.
  • I absolutely loathe the Neo Copperback speaker. It's entirely my fault, I got exactly what I ordered.  I really wanted to like it. I tried very hard to like it, spending several days trying to get a sound I liked dialled in without success.  I tried it against about 8 different guitar speakers (V30s, weber grey wolf, weber silver wolf, tone tubby alnico red, JBL K140, greenbacks, Eminence guv'nor) and I found everything else far preferable. I would suggest that the Copperback is so unlike other guitar speakers, that it would probably be useful to encourage anyone who is thinking of getting one to try one is person if possible, or at least listen carefully to some of the comparison videos on youtube. This is doubly true for anyone having it shipped to the opposite side of the planet.

To get to the cab usable for me I need to replace the speaker.  Can you let me know what 12" speakers will fit in this custom cab?  I would like to fit a V30, G12M-65 creamback, Greenback, or maybe a Hempback.

Cheers,

Isaac

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Isaac,

Glad you're liking the cab, sorry you don't like the Copperback! Did you not watch our videos demoing it? I thought we made it pretty clear on them that it is not like other guitar speakers and is very much a love or hate speaker - and to be honest, in the first videos we made with it we really didn't get it. Now we know how to use it we think it's incredible - for the right player and gear and music. Unfortunately because your cab is an Upsetter 112N I'm not sure it will fit any ceramic magnet 12" speakers in it, so the choice is limited to neo ones (or others with very shallow depth front to back). We only fit the Neo V-Type, Neo Creamback, BN12-300S and Neo 250 Copperback from the Celestion range.

Have you tried applying some speaker models or IRs to the Copperback? I know it's not FRFR but in some ways its more like that than its like typical guitar speakers.

Best regards,

Alex

Yep, it’s stereo. Doing a bit of woofer settling. Tweeter match is top switch off and dial full up. New speaker seems inherently brighter.

20/05/25 - Super Twin - USA

For what it’s worth, this is a killer setup. Fantastic combination of lightweight gear and just sounds divine. I currently have 4 Barefaced cabs, with another trying to get through customs, and they all perform flawlessly. Looking forward to taking this out next week!!

28/05/25 - Big Baby 2 - UK

I own a Barefaced Big Baby 2 bass cabinet provided to me by a good friend. It has proved nothing short of excellent driven by an Eich T900 which is capable of giving 600W into the Big Baby 8ohms nominal resistance which is ample for pretty much any gig.
However, it is a bit ‘overkill’ for practice and rehearsal purposes.

I was thinking, therefore, of adding a Super Mini which when put with the Big Baby 2 would, with 4ohm resistance, make use of the Eich’s full power where necessary and provide a more portable cab for practice purposes etc.

I see from the information available on your website that you recommend pairing a Super Mini cab and a Big Baby 3, so my initial query is; will the Super Mini work as well with the Big Baby 2?

Mike

Hi Mike,

Great to hear!

Yes, the SM or SMT will work very well with the BB2.

05/05/25 - Super Twin - UK

Hi Guys,

I hope you are well, I have had my Super Twin for about 10 years now.

Had some issues on Saturday night at my gig with regard to the sound popping when hitting certain notes which when tested turned out to be something in the signal chain rather than the cab.

But this got me thinking, does my cab need to be serviced? It's been heavily gigged and toured but has never given me any problems apart from an over enthusiastic stage hand loading in and knocked the cab over onto its back, resulting in a high frequency from the Tweeter for about 20secs pre gig which has never returned. That was 7 years ago.

If you could let me know because its been the best and most reliable piece of equipment I have ever owned, and I want it to continue to be for many years yet.

Many thanks
Craig
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Craig,

There isn't really any servicing you can do with a speaker cab - it's either working fine or its broken! If it's broken then often it can be fixed but there aren't any wear items etc.
We do try to build everything to last for as long as possible!

Best regards,

Alex
